Local.com offers a free basic listing to all businesses, in addition to its PPC ad product. PPC ads are based on an auction model and are placed on SERPs depending upon keyword and category. They also offer a Local Featured Sponsor option that guarantees your ad will be placed above organic results and allows you to target by geographic region in addition to keywords. Their other product, Local promote ties your ad to the mapping section, while a premium option will also give you a featured sponsor position on the search engine. And they are partnered with yelp, city search and Superpages.com.
Local promote business listings are distributed outside of the Local.com network to Google Local, Yahoo! Local, Super Pages.com, superpages.com, among others and have a monthly fee associated with them.
With Local.com, the searcher enters a query term and location into the search box and the relevant businesses near the location appear on a results page. Sponsor links (which could link to Yahoo! or Google Locals map results page), and featured sponsors (with a link to the business website), are listed first, followed by Local Results, which have even more sponsored links at the top. Organic results can be sorted by relevance, distance or in alphabetical order.
