Today I'm pleased to bring you Marissa. I have to tell you she caught my attention on Facebook with her status updates and causes. I find her as someone who is not ashamed to share her beliefs and stands up for such causes as speaking out about human trafficking, amimal cruelty, being eco-friendly and basically encouraging us to be the change we wish to see in the world. You may or may not agree with everything she promotes, but you have to admire her courage in doing so. Thanks Marissa glad to have you here.
“I think, therefore, I am.”
But if we cease to think, what becomes of us? It seems that the culture around us, bombarded with media and technology, no longer prizes individual thought, in fact, some technology encourages us not to think. We already have technology that can read human thoughts in the brain. But my public relations teacher recently told us about an up-and-coming gadget that you wear around your neck, and it tells you, based on your set preferences, which products you would like to buy. Really? I’m not at all surprised that this is being invented, but am bemused as to why we need such a thing. Technology has been extremely helpful to human in countless ways, so don’t think I am bashing technology, but I am disheartened that we are creating things that remove the need for human thought. Human thought is endangered as it is, but it is essential to keep our cultures and societies in check.
Of course there are a great number of people who question everything, do research, and think enough for the rest of us. But the majority of people just go along day to day accepting life as it is. In a way this behavior allows, and even encourages, corruption and the taking advantage of society. Let us take a look at bottled water. Many people think it is cleaner than tap, although studies continue to disprove this. Why do people assume it is cleaner? (I’d actually like to hear your comments on this question...I’m at a loss for answers)
Considering the fact that bottled water costs about 1,900 times more than tap water, I think its safe to say its much more of a money making scheme than any effort to safeguard us from hazards in our tap water. When there is that much money involved, you have to examine the motives. 9 times out of 10 (more like 10/10), your interest or well-being is low on the list of priorities.
This motive-examination is important in all aspects of the world; most obviously is advertising and consumerism, but also in politics (it’s all about whose paying them), and anything business related. So start asking questions; who what when where, and most importantly, why? Don’t let the world take advantage of you.
