When I think of Risk Taking I think of myself as a seven year old. When I was seven my Aunt took me downtown to register for the Pee Wee Baseball team . I didn't know anything about baseball other than playing catch in the backyard. I did know about fear though. I was scared to death to play on an organized team in front of a crowd. And even more scared of failing. I was only seven and you were required to be eight yrs. old to play on the pee wee league back then. Wooo, I was safe I wouldn't have to play. Not! My Aunt was able to convince them to sign me anyway. So now I'm committed, I have to play. I don't remember much about how well I did or didn't play that summer but we won the trophy as champs. And I remember being the pitcher at least a time or two. So it didn't turn out too bad after all.The bloggers having the most success at blogging are the risk takers. For some it comes easy and for others it takes time. I'm learning that it's very important to do more than just write. I need to get outside of my blog and research. I need to listen to the repetition of what's working for those succeeding and apply them to my efforts. Some of the risks I've taken lately have given me courage to be a little more consistent in what I write about. I write two other blogs and starting a fourth and will eventually let two go by the way side in order to assure that the ones I decide to keep will be productive.
Susan Gunelius Susan spent over a decade managing marketing programs for some of the largest companies in the world, including divisions of AT&T and HSBC. Her marketing background led her to transition to a business writing career which has included many books. One of which I am looking forward to, Blogging All-in-One for Dummies, comes out sometime in 2010. Susan discusses taking risk and the importance thereof in her article Start a blog - Top 10 Tips for Beginner Bloggers to Start a Blog. She also discusses other tips of importance in that article. What stands out for me in her risk taking tip is not falling prey to every new bell or whistle that becomes available for your blog. In other words don't add a widget if it doesn't work to benefit you and your blog and most importantly your blogs audience. But don't be afraid to try new things. Change your theme, background, colors and if your running ads make sure if you want success with them, target your audience.(these things I need work on I know)
Risk the strength to write in my style. Over in Buzzle.com Deanna Mascle says, "Developing an individual writing process is key to your development and success as a writer." This lady has become one of my favorite teachers in my writing process. You can learn more about her by visiting her own personal site Deanna Mascle, and a little bit of her goes along way. By taking advantage of my own skills instead of attempting to use yours is helping me to develop as an individual. I've always wanted to write. I've always known I could. I just haven't always listened to others in the process and in doing so I have not necessarily failed, I've just not succeeded because I haven't taken the risks to be me. One of my favorite quotes that I have embedded up there in lah lah land is, "Know one knows what you want in this life but you and if you want to succeed you have to do what's right for you." (sorry can't remember who said it but haven't forgot the quote) So get out there, research, take risks and be YOU. Your blog will improve.
